ECB to Decide on Private Investment in Hundred League by Spring 2024

1 min read

The ECB is consulting with various potential investors, including IPL franchise owners and private equity firms, about the possibility of investment in the Hundred. The plan is to make a decision on the tournament’s future by April 2024 in order to implement changes for the 2025 edition. The ECB’s preferred option is to open the tournament up to private investors and allow existing teams to become franchises, with primary host counties holding 50% equity stakes. Potential investors from the Middle East, such as sovereign wealth funds in the United Arab Emirates, are being considered. Regardless of the investment, the Hundred’s future is secured by Sky Sports’ broadcast deal with the ECB. Discussions are also underway about potential changes to the tournament’s structure and salary improvements for players amidst speculation about future format changes. Any adjustments to the Hundred’s model would require a three-quarters majority amongst the 18 first-class counties and MCC.
