Zimbabwe Cricket has suspended allrounders Wessly Madhevere and Brandon Mavuta for allegedly breaching anti-doping rules. The suspension is immediate and includes all cricket activities. The players tested positive for a banned recreational drug in an out-of-competition dope test. They will face a disciplinary hearing, which will determine the length of their suspension, in accordance with the ZC Code of Conduct for Players and Team Officials.
Madhevere and Mavuta were part of the Zimbabwe side that recently faced Ireland in a home series. Mavuta played in the third T20I and the three ODIs, while Madhevere played in all three T20Is. Mavuta has played four Tests, 12 ODIs, and 10 T20Is since his debut in 2018, while Madhevere has featured in two Tests, 36 ODIs, and 60 T20Is since his debut in 2020.
After the Ireland series, Madhevere played for Mashonaland Eagles in the Logan Cup, scoring 4 runs and taking 2 wickets for 34 runs. Mavuta did not play any competitive cricket following the Ireland series.
The suspensions of Madhevere and Mavuta follow the resignation of Zimbabwe’s head coach, Dave Houghton, after the team failed to qualify for the 2024 T20 World Cup and missed out on the 2023 ODI World Cup.
