Usman Khawaja escaped a possibly serious concussion after being hit in the head while attempting to secure Australia’s victory over West Indies. He was struck on the jaw by a ball from Shamar Joseph, prompting concern and requiring an assessment by the team doctor. Khawaja initially passed a concussion test in the dressing room, but was sent for an x-ray and possibly a CT scan to check for structural damage to his jaw. He will need to pass another concussion test to play in the second Test in Brisbane on January 25. Captain Pat Cummins reported that Khawaja seemed okay but would be monitored. With Australia lacking a spare batter, Matt Renshaw was given clearance to fly to the Gold Coast for a BBL match, but with Khawaja’s injury, he may be called back to play in Brisbane.
