It’s a fine balancing act, is not it? When announcing a 16-man Test squad to tour India in early 2024, Rob Key, England’s managing director, says that selection should be seen more as an art. Rather than rely on county cricket numbers, England is focusing on the attributes that have correlated with success in recent Test series in India. Key also mentioned that the way Indian spinners bowl is different from the classical English spinner. They have been trying to earmark the spinners who they think will be most useful in India and that’s how an uncapped player like Tom Hartley is in their squad. Hartley has been on England’s radar for the past 18 months and is seen as the closest bowler that England have to Axar Patel. In both cases, communication between the board and players ought to have been clearer.
