Maxwell informed his team-mates after the Stars’ final game against Hobart Hurricanes, as reported by the Daily Telegraph and confirmed by ESPNcricinfo.
Adelaide Strikers’ victory over Sydney Thunder ended the Stars’ chances of making the finals, after they lost to Melbourne Renegades.
Maxwell, 35, has two years left on his contract. This season, he scored 243 runs at an average of 34.71 and a strike-rate of 173.57, with a top score of 35 not out, and also took seven wickets.
Stars have never won the BBL and have been runners-up three times, including in the last two seasons. Maxwell expressed frustration at the team’s lack of success in recent years.
Former England coach Peter Moores praised Maxwell’s leadership and commitment to the club, while also mentioning that the Stars are interested in re-signing Marcus Stoinis.
