IPL and SA20 Serve as Key Selection Platforms for India and South Africa’s World Cup Squads

India only have six T20Is left to determine their XI before next year’s World Cup in the West Indies and USA. Suryakumar Yadav, the captain for the series in South Africa, isn’t worried by the limited game time. He believes the upcoming IPL 2024 will help India’s team management finalize their combination, with 14 league games set to precede the T20 World Cup. Suryakumar stated that players have plenty of experience and don’t foresee any issues in squad selection.

Both India and South Africa face the challenge of only having six T20Is before the 2024 World Cup, but South Africa could also utilize players from the SA20. Their captain, Aiden Markram, acknowledged the unusual situation but expressed confidence that T20 cricket opportunities, such as SA20 and the domestic T20 competition, will help them select their best World Cup squad.

India is focusing on their new finishers Rinku Singh and Jitesh Sharma, who have impressed with their middle-order firepower. This series presents an opportunity for them to strengthen their cases for selection for the T20 World Cup. Suryakumar emphasized that they are being asked to replicate their performances for their states and franchises.

Another area of concern for India is the absence of a reliable sixth-bowling option due to Hardik Pandya’s injury. However, Suryakumar is pleased with the options available, including Tilak Varma, who has experience bowling in the domestic T20 tournament.

Despite none of the players in India’s current squad having played a T20I in South Africa, Suryakumar is confident that they will adapt to the conditions. He believes the team is well-prepared and equipped to succeed on the fast tracks in South Africa.
