Hobart Hurricanes’ 187 for 8 (Wade 63, McDermott 50, Lawrence 4-35, Coulter-Nile 2-18, Imad 2-35) beat Melbourne Stars’ 180 for 4 (Webster 55*, Stoinis 48, Maxwell 32, Ellis 2-29) by seven runs.
The Hurricanes finally got a win after a disappointing BBL campaign, defeating Melbourne Stars by seven runs at the MCG. Both teams had no chance of making it to the finals before the match, and the Hurricanes were able to salvage some pride with a win.
Matthew Wade and Ben McDermott got the Hurricanes off to a strong start, but they lost wickets in quick succession after the opening partnership was broken. Beau Webster and Marcus Stoinis gave Stars hope of a win, but Stoinis’ dismissal in the 18th over dimmed their chances.
Stars’ Dan Lawrence took 4 for 35 to give his team a boost, but it wasn’t enough to secure the win. Hurricanes’ captain Nathan Ellis played a key role in securing the win, despite a tough night that included dropping catches and getting injured.
The win for the Hurricanes was a consolation in what has been a disappointing campaign, while Stars missed out on the finals for the fourth season in a row.
