Cameron Green Makes Test XI Cut, Opener Position Still Unsettled as Matthew Renshaw Joins Squad

2 min read

Cameron Green will play in the first Test against West Indies in Adelaide, but it is uncertain if he will open the batting. The Australian selectors confirmed his spot in the XI, and Matt Renshaw has been added to the 13-man squad, leaving no room for Cameron Bancroft or Marcus Harris.

Australia’s XI for the first Test, starting on January 17, will see just one change, with Green replacing the retired David Warner. However, the batting order has yet to be confirmed, potentially leading to a decision between Green and Steven Smith to open.

Renshaw has been included as the backup batter in case of injury or concussion. Scott Boland remains in the squad as the spare fast bowler, but it is unlikely he will play given the fitness of Australia’s main three fast bowlers.

Chair of selectors George Bailey stated that the panel opted for the “best six batters” in Australia, rather than choosing an experienced opener, which had been a long-standing plan for the panel.

Bailey said, “Cameron Green will come into the playing XI for the Test in Adelaide in a squad also containing Scott Boland and Matthew Renshaw. We have selected a team we believe contains the best six batters in the country.”

The decision has sparked debate among former players and fans regarding who should replace Warner, with differing opinions on Bancroft and Green. Similarly, there is division on whether Green or Smith should open, with Labuschagne and others expressing their views.

The Australia squad for the first Test against West Indies includes Pat Cummins, Scott Boland, Alex Carey, Cameron Green, Josh Hazlewood, Travis Head, Usman Khawaja, Marnus Labuschagne, Nathan Lyon, Mitchell Marsh, Matthew Renshaw, Steven Smith, and Mitchell Starc.
