India’s Suryakumar Yadav recently underwent surgery in Munich for a sports hernia that had been worsening over time. This is his second surgery in recent months, following an ankle injury during India’s tour of South Africa. After the surgery, Suryakumar expressed his gratitude for the well wishes and assured everyone that he would be back soon. He had been in Bengaluru for rehab until a week ago and is expected to start rehab again after the groin surgery in mid-February. It is anticipated that he will return to action in the IPL 2024, which begins in the third week of March.
Suryakumar had been appointed as India’s T20I captain for the series in South Africa in the absence of Rohit Sharma and Hardik Pandya. Despite his injuries, he managed to score 56 off 36 balls in the second T20I and 100 off 56 balls in the third T20I. He was not part of the ODI squad for the subsequent series in South Africa and was also unavailable for selection for the recent T20I series at home against Afghanistan due to his injuries.
India emerged victorious in their last T20I series against Afghanistan before the 2024 T20 World Cup, winning all three matches. The final match of the series in Bengaluru made history as the first T20 international to be decided after two Super Overs.
