“My rehab is going well and the NCA medical experts are pleased with my progress,” he told Times of India. “There’s some stiffness in my ankle but that’s okay. I’ve started training and I think I’ll be able to come back for the England series.”

Shami was part of India’s Test squad for the South Africa series, but was withdrawn due to fitness issues. He was not included in the T20I squad for matches against Afghanistan.

“We did well in the second Test,” Shami said of India’s performance in South Africa. “Unfortunately I missed it due to injury, but I want to return to competitive cricket as soon as possible. Hopefully you’ll see me back in action against England.”

Shami recently received the Arjuna Award and was the highest wicket-taker at the 2023 ODI World Cup. India will play England in five Tests as part of the ongoing World Test Championship cycle, where they currently hold second place.
