Shane Watson: Green an option for Test opener
Former Australia all-rounder Shane Watson is confident Cameron Green has the potential to succeed as a Test opener. Watson believes traditional experience as an opener is not necessary as Australia’s selectors look for a replacement for the retired David Warner, ahead of the West Indies series in January. In an interview with ESPNcricinfo, Watson stated that Green has the necessary skills, run-scoring ability, and understanding to be an opening batter. While Green has never batted higher than No. 6 in his 36 Test innings and has no first-class experience as an opener, Watson believes Green’s mindset and talent make him a viable option at the top of the order. Additionally, Watson noted that managing Green’s bowling loads would be critical, similarly to how Ricky Ponting managed his workload as an opener.
