Australia’s batters Marnus Labuschagne and Steven Smith fought off a fierce attack from Pakistan and managed to put together a 79-run third-wicket partnership. However, Pakistan made a comeback, dismissing Smith and Labuschagne late in the first session on the third day of the third Test.
Smith was caught on 38 after chipping a delivery from left-arm quick Mir Hamza to cover, while Labuschagne was bowled out for 60 by offspinning allrounder Agha Salman.
Despite the setbacks, Travis Head and Mitchell Marsh were able to survive until lunch, leaving the match in a balanced position.
David Warner and Usman Khawaja were the only wickets to fall on day two, which was shortened due to bad weather.
Australia struggled to make significant progress against disciplined bowling from the Pakistani side, but managed to gradually increase their run rate. Smith and Labuschagne found success against spinner Sajid Khan, while Aamer Jamal’s short-ball approach was unsuccessful.
Smith, who has had difficulties with short-pitched bowling, narrowly avoided dismissal on one occasion. Labuschagne, seeking to improve on his 2023 performance, was patient and reached his half-century with a superb pull shot.
The third day of the New Year’s Test is dedicated to the memory of Glenn McGrath’s wife, Jane, who passed away in 2008.
