Steven Smith has expressed interest in the role of being David Warner’s replacement as Australia’s next Test opener after Warner retires. Smith confirmed his interest in taking on this role during an interview with ABC Grandstand after the third day’s play. He stated that he is willing to go up the top and is keen if that’s what the selectors want to do. The selectors had hoped to include Green in the side after Warner’s retirement, with various options being considered, including moving Marnus Labuschagne up to open from No. 3. However, it was unexpected that Smith would be interested in the opener’s role, given his impressive track record at No. 4 and No. 3 in Test cricket. Smith is reportedly looking for a fresh challenge to reinvigorate himself after a relatively quiet year in 2023. The selectors will make a decision on Warner’s replacement at the end of the Sydney Test before the squad reconvenes ahead of the first of two Tests against West Indies starting on January 17.
