ICC Board Suspends Sri Lanka Cricket Operations

1 min read

The ICC Board suspended Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) due to significant government interference. The ICC determined that SLC breached its obligations as a Member by allowing government interference in its governance. The conditions of the suspension will be decided by the ICC Board in the future. The ICC Board met online on Friday to address the situation and conveyed to SLC that the next steps will be decided when the ICC Board meets on November 21. The elected SLC board headed by Shammi Silva was running cricket in the country at the time of the suspension. Previous government interference did not prompt suspension by the ICC, but it did result in funds being put in escrow and a demotion to observer status at board meetings. Sri Lanka’s sports minister has a role in ratifying national teams as per the nation’s sports law.
