The Somerset captaincy has been handed over by Tom Abell who has decided to step down after a rough 2023 season. The 29-year-old led the club to victory in the 2019 Royal London Cup and had success in red-ball competitions as well but struggled in the latest season and felt it was time to relinquish his role. Abell expressed that it was a tough decision but ultimately in the best interest of the team and the club. He also mentioned that he felt it was time for a change and that his decision was based on what he felt was best for the team moving forward. Abell also thanked his support network including his family and expressed his gratitude for being a part of great teams with great players. He also had the opportunity for international honors earlier in the year but withdrew due to an injury. Somerset’s Director of Cricket, Andy Hurry, praised Abell’s leadership and dedication during his time as captain. He mentioned that Abell has been a credit to the club both on and off the field and has left a lasting impact on the club’s history.
