Exciting Showdown: Australia and West Indies Clash in 1st Test 2023/24

2 min read
Pat Cummins, the second captain since 1992 to send a side in after winning the toss at Adelaide Oval, hopes to exploit cool, overcast conditions and a lively-looking surface as Australia bowls first against West Indies. The decision surprised the crowd as West Indies has a top six with five players who have played just 11 Test matches between them, excluding captain Kraigg Brathwaite.
During the warm-up, West Indies’ three debutants, Kavem Hodge, Justin Greaves, and Shamar Joseph, were presented with their Test caps. Brian Lara, West Indies all-time Test leading runscorer, presented Hodge his cap, while Greaves and Joseph received their caps from captain Kraigg Brathwaite and former West Indies fast bowler Ian Bishop respectively.

Australia made just one change from the side that beat Pakistan, with Cameron Green returning in place of retired David Warner. Green will bat at No. 4, and Steven Smith will open for the first time in Test cricket in his 106th Test match.

West Indies, facing a monumental task to try and break a 27-year winless drought in Australia, has not won any of their last 16 Tests down under and lost 14 of those.
